Tournament Next Month!

No, it's not in South Carolina, but if you're in for a good time, consider putting a team together for the upcoming Florida Freeshafters Open Tournament All the tourney info is on there...be sure to check out last year's photos.

I no longer live in SC, but when I did, Rob, Les, and many others dove the SC coast and came the following day for the weigh in ceremonies for several different tournaments. Being a longer distance away, it is a commitment, but bear in mind that there's a huge prize table and free beer...never know, you might even bring some gear along and get some drops while you're down here.on

I write to Charleston Diving in hopes that some divers will consider participating - everyone will enjoy it if you can bring down a cooler of those mutant hogfish, and this gives you a reason to finally shoot those huge AJ's that you pass up on every dive!

Last year, my barely 13 year old kid dove it, did 6 tanks and dove like a champ. He walked away with a sweet gear bag and a $1000 Kudana Speargun.

Diving day is Saturday, May 19, weigh in on the 20th.

Any questions?

Sea Squaw Report- Nov 26th

Went offshore to the Charleston 60 Reef yesterday. Seas were 2' to 3' on the way out and building on the way in. Water temp was 64 on top and 60 on bottom. Visibility was nice at around 40'. For some reason, I had a sinus squeeze and could not get below 42', so I hung out with a school of big Amberjack for about 45 minutes while Ken took care of business on the bottom. Ken got one nice Gag Grouper (picture attached) in the 16-20 lb range. We were back at the dock around 11:30 am. Always great to get out on the Big Pond.

Seasquaw Dive Report

http://www.charlestondiving.com/forums/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=1155Captain Bruce here. Headed offshore Monday to some ledges in about 100' of water with my dive buds, Janine (Aquawoman) and Sandy. Seas were about 1' on the trip out and about 2' for the trip back to the barn (nice). Sea surface temp at the ledges was 77 degrees and it was 72 degrees on bottom. It was slack tide on the first dive so vis was down to about 5'-10'. Lionfish were lined up all the way down the ledge but they have not hurt the rest of the sea life yet as there were red snapper, grouper, spades, triggerfish, a few hogfish and tropicals everywhere. We got 3 big spiny lobsters and Janine grabbed a slipper lobster on the first dive. Second dive, the vis cleared up to about 20'-30'. We bagged another three big spinys and I was fortunate enough to spear a 20 lb gag grouper.

PICTURE ATTACHED.

It was a great day on the big pond. Take care and be safe out there.

Went out to a ledge in 85' of water Saturday with Ken, Janine & Sandy. Water temp was 82 on top and 72 on bottom. Vis on the bottom was about 15'. Saw a stingray but no gamefish around. My dive buddy, Ken, got 1 slipper lobster. Moved in to a wreck in about 65' of water. I got 1 flounder (3 lbs, 18") and Ken got a big flounder (5.5 lbs, 24"). We also saw a huge Jewfish (Goliath Grouper) on the wreck. Seas were flat for the trip back to the barn. Great day on the Big Pond!

8/17/11 Diving And Fishing

Fished out of Georgetown, it was pretty rough so we pulled up short of our target area and put a limit of BSB and silvers in the boat relatively quickly. Moved areas and put one legal gag in the box on rod and reel but the bite quit so time to dive. Dove the first area and picked up two nice hogs, then moved to another ledge and shot another gag and a red grouper. Surfaced from that dive to see a nasty storm a few miles away and moving in pretty quick so we packed up and headed for the hill. Hopefully we can get out again this weekend.
Hook and line gag and hogs

total for the day

New To The Area

Hey all,

I just moved to the area and am itching to get back in the water. I've been freediving and spearfishing in Okinawa for the past 2 and a half years. I just got a new Wong 55 magnum hybrid and want to get out and use it. I spoke with Victor from Lowcountry Scuba and he said this was the best way to contact spearfishermen in the area. I am SCUBA certified but not yet Nitrox certified which i plan on completing soon. I will be limited to spearfishing on the weekends due to my schedule. All my experience is with freediving but I am open to whatever gets me close to fish. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Charleston Jetties Free Diving Spearfishing Questions

A few questions...
1. I don't live in Chas anymore, I come down for a week to visit family and try to make it out to the jetties 2-3 times to spearfish, but the last 2 years, every time I go at high tide the viz sucks, 1-2 feet, the first thing I see is a sheepshead turning tail, so I turn around and head back to the landing. Is there any rhyme or reason as to when the viz will be good? Sucks to get the boat ready, launch, ride out there, only to turn around and come back because of bad viz. When the viz is good I can get 8-15 sheepshead, the better the viz, the more sheepshead.

2. My usual technique is to float along the surface along the rocks until I spot a sheepshead and then I slowly roll on my side and position the spear and then shoot. In all my time out there, I've only seen one flounder and it was a small one sitting on a rock. But I hear of others doing good on flounder...is that scuba divers hugging the bottom? I never see flounder or redfish or trout for that matter, but I basically only float the surface.

3. I always target the biggest sheepshead I see, but I've never see any over 7-8 lbs, but I know there are much bigger ones out there...do the big ones always stay deep? I've speared the biggest sheepshead I've seen out there and nothing over 8 lbs, ever.

4. Is the water clearer near the bottom? Maybe when the viz near the top sucks, I should dive down? But then very little light makes it down 12-15 ft and at my age it's tough to dive down, just to see if I see anything, more than 20-30 times.

5. Are there any free divers that do good on flounder? When is the best time of the year for that? Do you find them on the sand up against the rocks?

6. I always go to the tip of the jetty, figuring the viz will be best there. The viz seems to do downhill the closer I get to land. Has anyone found good viz closer to land?

7. Are there any other spearfishing options at the jetties if the viz sucks at the surface?

I know, a lot of questions, thanks for any insight!

Gun Camera Video 5-20-11

Fished out of Belle Isle on the Carolina Knights. Caught a few dolphin in 150' then did a 170' dive on southwest Banks. Took some good video with a speargun mounted hd camera. Saw some good grouper late in the dive but just didn't have enough bottom time to ethically go after them especially solo.

2nd dive was all red snapper. Big schools of them on the video. They were all over in 140'. I wish i had used the camera when i dove a couple weeks ago. I saw probably 3 times this many on my dives in 100' of even larger snapper but didn't film it.

Dive 3 was on the Anchor Wreck. Filmed some good video sticking big flounder. Water is still pretty cold, lots of fish out there.

Red snapper video
http://youtu.be/VmAo1K26PEY

Anchor wreck video
http://youtu.be/tpQ1pbi0eNU

170' ledge dive
http://youtu.be/6b2LNdomrjQ
